Notre Dame will honor former coach Lou Holtz at halftime of Saturday game against Michigan. September 11th, 2008
Notre Dame will honor former coach Lou Holtz at halftime of Saturday game against Michigan. For his recent selection to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Holtz, who guided the Fighting Irish to their last national championship in 1988, will be part of that teams 20th anniversary celebration this weekend on the Notre Dame campus.
Prior to Saturdays game, the school also will dedicate a sculpture of Holtz, who posted a 100-30-2 record in his 11 seasons at Notre Dame. He has coached more games than any other Notre Dame mentor and ranks second on the schools all-time wins list behind the legendary Knute Rockne.
Holtz, who took the Fighting Irish to nine straight New Years Day bowl games from 1987-1995, became the fifth Notre Dame coach to win at least one national championship, joining Rockne, Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian and Dan Devine.
The school also has sculptures dedicated to the other four coaches outside Notre Dame Stadium.
In 33 seasons, Holtz, who coached at five other schools, posted a career mark of 249-132-7 and ranked third in wins among active coaches at the time of his retirement in 2004, trailing only Penn States Joe Paterno and Floridas Bobby Bowdens.
Holtzs 12 bowl wins rank fourth on the all-time list.

Nicholls State cancels game against Bowie State.
Nicholls State has canceled Saturdays game against Bowie State due to the damage caused by Hurricane Gustav to the lighting at John Guidry Stadium.
An inspection of the stadiums lights indicated that at least two poles lack structural integrity as a result of high winds. Nicholls State will request that the state of Louisiana take immediate action to address the situation.
This is second straight game that the school has canceled as the Colonels also were unable to play at New Mexico State on September 4.
I have decided that the safety of the players, coaches, fans and officials is of utmost importance, school president Stephen Hulbert said. Bowie State officials were also concerned about the unpredictability of Hurricane Ike and its impact on their travel plans.
Hulbert said that if stadium lighting is not available, the teams remaining five home games could be moved to the afternoon.
While I am eager for the 2008 Colonel football team to take the field, I must ensure that everyone who comes to Guidry Stadium can enjoy the game without fear of injury, Hulbert said.
